Algorithms meet AfroFood: A Weekend in Freiburg Full of AI Insights

Freiburg im Breisgau recently served as the vibrant backdrop for our ANSA Conference 2025, where the energy was truly infectious. From September 26th to 28th, our community gathered to explore a theme at the very forefront of global development: “AI in Education, Research and Business: Opportunities and Challenges for Africa and Europe”.

A Weekend of Innovation and Connection

The conference was more than just a series of lectures; it was a space filled with life, energy, exchange, inspiration, and motivation. We kicked off the weekend with an AI-World-Café and a delicious AfroFood dinner, setting the stage for deep connection.

Our keynote speakers, including Dr. Julius Sechang Mboli, challenged us to think critically about “Bridging the AI Divide” to ensure an inclusive future. Participants also shared fascinating research, ranging from integrating digital technologies in anatomy education in Ghana to using AI to assess the impact of war on vegetation in Sudan.

The ANSA Spirit

As we often say, “ANSA is what WE make of it,” and this was evident in every thoughtful question and enthusiastic discussion. Beyond the academic program, we held our Members Assembly and Board elections, ensuring the association’s mission of building bridges between Germany and African countries continues to thrive.

A Taste of Freiburg History

While we enjoyed the modern discussions and local hospitality at places like the Augustiner Restaurant, we couldn’t help but be inspired by the deep history of our host city.

Fun Fact: Freiburg is home to “Zum Roten Bären,” which is widely considered the oldest guesthouse in Germany. Its foundations date back to the city’s founding around 1120. It has survived centuries of change—much like the enduring connections we strive to build within ANSA!

Thank you

to everyone who brought their “special spark” to Freiburg. We left with our hearts full and our minds buzzing with new ideas for the future.

Interested in shaping our next big event? The Orga-Team is always looking for motivated members to help watch the ANSA spirit unfold from the front row.
